I am Ian Sharp, a non-commercial photographer based in Grantham, Lincolnshire, UK.
I specialise in conceptual portraiture in its broadest definition.
I hold a number of photographic qualifications including LRPS, and am currently studying a Masters Degree in New Documentary Photography.
Because my work is driven by passion rather than profit, I’m able to focus entirely on projects that inspire me, shot either in my small home studio or on location.

About Ian
Conceptual Portraiture
In conceptual portraiture, images stop purely documenting reality and start questioning it. The camera becomes less about capturing what exists and more about constructing ideas—translating emotion, symbolism, and narrative into visual form. Each photograph is a deliberate composition, designed not just to be seen, but to be interpreted.
My work explores imagery that challenges the obvious, inviting viewers to look beyond the surface and engage with meaning, ambiguity, and intent. In conceptual photography, the idea comes first; the image simply gives it shape.
Sometimes the iconography is more explicit; at other times, an image is strong enough to be carried by its aesthetic alone. And sometimes the unexpected takes over, and the images become quirky. I rather love that.
My Journey
In 2021, my lifelong relationship with photography evolved from a hobby and a source of curiosity into a more serious commitment to developing my craft. A short Open University course unlocked a desire to experiment, explore and work across multiple photographic genres. That initial academic curiosity led to an HND, passed with Distinction, followed by the award of the Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain, and ultimately to a Master’s Degree in New Documentary Photography—a journey that closely aligns with my passion for Contemporary and Conceptual Photography.
This journey has never been about achieving perfection. Rather, it has been about discovering my own personal truth through photography. Each frame forms part of an ongoing process of learning to see more clearly, pushing boundaries and refining a visual voice that feels increasingly authentic.
For me, photography is not simply about what is visible. It is also about what is felt, what is suggested and, ultimately, what remains in the memory.
My journey is far from complete. In fact, I like to think it has only just begun.
