Inhabiting Ideas
I am drawn to images that tell a story, create atmosphere, or encourage the viewer to look a little longer. I love work that is slightly quirky, unexpected or unconventional, and I am always interested in working with new models to create something distinctive rather than simply replicating the homogenised imagery we encounter online every day.
For me, every shoot begins with a simple question: what are we trying to achieve? The emphasis on we is deliberate. I enjoy working collaboratively, bringing together the ideas, experiences and perspectives of photographer and model to create something neither of us might have produced alone. Whether the intention is to tell a story, explore a mood, or simply create something visually striking, I believe the creative process is at its strongest when it is genuinely shared.
I encourage models to embrace that collaboration and move beyond simply posing. I am increasingly interested in an approach closer to method acting - responding to an idea, emotion or imagined situation, and allowing expression, movement and body language to develop naturally. The aim is not simply to strike a pose, but to inhabit an idea and see where it takes us.
Conceptual Nude
My current conceptual work is increasingly—though not exclusively—drawn towards the nude. For me, nudity is far more than simply the absence of clothing, and often make-up; it can be a way of stripping back some of the layers we construct around ourselves in search of something more honest beneath—the authentic self.
I am interested in the space between how we present ourselves to the world and who we might be when expectations, conventions and defences begin to fall away. Within that space lie vulnerability, individuality, imperfection and a raw, natural beauty that belongs uniquely to each person.
Creating a respectful, safe and trusting environment is fundamental to the way I work. From there, I prefer to allow movement to become intuitive and instinctive, giving open body language, gesture and emotion the freedom to evolve naturally rather than imposing traditional poses or predetermined ideas of beauty.
The intention is not simply to photograph a body, but to allow a story to emerge—to create images that feel open, honest and human, and perhaps reveal something that words alone cannot. I want the narrative to develop organically, free from the conventions, constraints and self-consciousness that can so often conceal our authentic selves.
I believe that a successful photography practice is built on shared objectives and mutual respect. Every project is different, and I prefer to approach each on its own terms - including the practicalities and the model fee - rather than working within a framework defined simply by the amount of skin on show.
My workflow is equally straightforward. I aim to create as much as possible in camera and keep post-processing relatively light. I prefer to take my time during a shoot: reviewing images together, refining ideas as we go and allowing the concept to develop naturally.
It is a slower and more considered approach than simply working through a sequence of poses, but I believe it creates a more enjoyable and genuinely collaborative experience - and, almost always, stronger and more interesting photographs.
